St. Sophia’s Cathedral poses worldly-wide known relic of history, architecture and monumental painting of the first part of the 11th century. The temple was erected in times of flourish of Kiev Rus during Yaroslav’s the Wise reign. Its name origins from the Greek word “sophia” that means “wisdom”. Built as the main metropolitan temple of Rus the cathedral was social, political and cultural centre of Kiev state in ancient times. Set-out of ambassadors, Kiev convocations (veche) were organized in the Cathedral. Here chronicles were written and created by Yaroslav the Wise the first library in Ancient Rus functioned. The scriptures and paintings scratched on the walls and architectural sections of St. Sophia’s Cathedral (graffiti sophiyskie) pose great value. About 300 graffities narrate on political events of the past, mention historical characters. The most ancient scriptures allowed itemizing the time of erection and inner trim of the Cathedral. Nowadays St. Sophia’s Cathedral is architectural and historical sanctuary.
